What is a Barndominium?
- Barndominiums blend barn structures with modern living spaces.
- They are popular due to their affordability and customization.
- Their durability and eco-friendly design make them a practical choice.
A barndominium is an innovative type of home that combines the traditional structure of a barn with the comfort and functionality of a modern living space. These homes often feature a steel frame, spacious layouts, and open-concept designs that make them both practical and stylish. A barndominium offers a unique blend of rustic charm and modern amenities, making it a popular and versatile housing option.
Born out of the need for flexible and affordable housing, barndominiums have become increasingly popular due to their cost-effectiveness and customization options. Whether you are looking for a cozy rural retreat or a multi-functional family home, barndominiums provide a spacious living area alongside potential spaces for garages, workshops, or even a home office.
Barndominiums are not only practical but also environmentally friendly. Constructed primarily from metal, these homes are durable and require less maintenance compared to traditional homes. Their simple design allows for easy adjustments and expansions, making them ideal for those looking to create a personalized living space.
How does modular construction work with barndo homes?
A modular barndominium is a barndo home that is constructed using a modular system. A modular building is a type of prefabricated building, specifically one that is made by connecting modules together. Think of it like assembling building blocks to create a structure.
Most barndominiums are not constructed this way. And a lot of people tend to picture smaller buildings when they think of modular homes, perhaps because tiny houses helped popularize modular construction. But the nice thing about modular construction is that it is scalable. That means you can also use it to construct large buildings, including spacious barndominium homes.
Key Benefits of Prefab Barndominium Construction
Here are some reasons to consider a modular barndo:
- The modular method of construction is cost-effective and fast. That means that it may take less time to complete your barndo project if you choose a modular barndo. It also means that your project will generate less waste, and the pricing will be more affordable.
- Another advantage of modular design is that the components for the home are prefabricated in a factory setting. As this is a more controlled environment than outdoors at a construction site, the builder is able to exercise more effective quality control. That means that the finished structure features more precisely fitted components, and may be more structurally sound with fewer gaps.
- Modular barndominiums are often constructed to be highly energy-efficient. This makes them sustainable compared to many traditionally-built homes, and can help you to reduce your energy expenses over time. That can be particularly valuable when you have a spacious home to heat and cool.
There are not many drawbacks to modular design. The most noteworthy one is that it can be challenging to finance a modular house, since it is not a traditional home. Then again, that can be true when constructing a barndominium anyway. Your builder may be able to connect you with suitable lenders.
The Deer Valley Homes Barndominium
Featured Modular Barndo
Now that you know some of the benefits of modular barndominiums, let’s take a look at a beautiful barndominium project from Deer Valley. This Deer Valley barndo is simply called DVHBSS-6604 by the company. You can order or customize this plan here.
This house, which is part of the Deer Valley Signature Series, measures 4,012 square feet, and contains 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. This spacious floor plan makes it suitable for a family.
Describing the modular barndo home, Deer Valley writes, “The Modular Barndominium is the result of our vision to offer a home that combines the best of both worlds: the charm of rural living with the efficiency and comfort of modern design. We set out to revolutionize the housing market by creating a home that is not only beautiful and functional but also built with precision in a state-of-the-art factory.”
The home’s exterior features a traditional shape. The siding of the house as well as its colors give it a somewhat more contemporary overall appearance, however. A short flight of steps leads up to a roomy shaded porch.
Upon entering the home, you can appreciate the open floor plan downstairs, where the kitchen and main living areas of the barndo are combined. The hardwood floor flows seamlessly between the “rooms,” which are not separated, but are subtly distinguished by the wood beams across the ceiling. This is an effective way of breaking up the space while not making it feel closed off in the slightest.
The kitchen is gorgeous, with plenty of cabinet and counter space for the cook(s).
It is easy to picture sitting down for a meal at this lovely dining table.
It is hard to be certain, but it looks like those beams might also be tracks for some sort of sliding partitions. If so, they offer even more functionality. This photo also shows off the stunning backsplash.
Barn doors provide a dash of rustic style that is in keeping with the theme of a barndo home.
We love the contrasting dark wood panels along the ceiling. These, too, help to break up the space and keep all the white from being visually overwhelming. At the same time, since there is a lot of white, that helps maintain the open, airy feel of the space.
It is a very balanced design in terms of the interplay of elements and colors.
There really is an impressive amount of open floor space. The owners of the Deer Valley barndo could install more furniture, or just keep that space open for activities. It is also sometimes nice just to have space for space’s sake.
Here is one of the bedrooms in the Deer Valley barndo. It continues the same simple, classic style from the main living areas, with the hardwood floor and the light walls and neutral colors. Once again, we see lots of open space.
We just love those sliding barn doors. They are stylish and convenient, as they do not intrude on the open space in the room.
If you have a large, secluded plot of land for this home with plenty of privacy, you can enjoy the views while you are taking your bath.
The shower is simply beautiful, with a luxurious look and feel.
Let’s take a look upstairs.
Alas, when Deer Valley took these photos, the upstairs part of the home was still unfinished. But this photo at least gives you an idea of how much floor space there is upstairs.
Heading back downstairs, lets take a a closer look at the barndo’s porch. This is one of our favorite features as not many prefab builders include a porch.
As you can see, the porch has the same wide open design as the rest of the home with plenty of extra floor space you could use however you see fit.
Final Thoughts
We love this type of prefab home option but how do you decide if it modular barndo would be ideal for:
- Families: Given its size, we would suggest the Deer Valley barndo mainly to families, especially those with two, three or even four children. That said, if you just want a lot of space, you can certainly move into this barndo if it is just you or you and a partner.
- Entertaining: The Deer Valley barndo is ideal for entertaining guests, thanks to how open its floor plan is. It would be easy to host a gathering in the main living space, or even out on the porch. You will have plenty of room for your guests to spread out, and preparing lots of food in the kitchen should be easy.
- Indoor-outdoor living: Finally, one more reason to choose this barndo is in fact its roomy porch. Those who want to make the most of their land and enjoy fresh air and views will delight in this feature, as well as the home’s large windows.
