S2A Modular Review
When most people think of Net Zero homes, modular homes aren’t usually the first things that come to mind. But S2A Modular hopes to change that with their innovative homes focused on sustainability, comfort and smart living.
Although S2A is a newcomer to the industry, they are making waves with their self-sustaining MegaFactories and looking to disrupt the market.
What Are Luxury Prefab Homes?
S2A Modular is a California-based modular home builder that’s looking to change the way the world builds modular homes. The company, founded in 2018, aims to build custom luxury homes that are electrically self-sustaining.
S2A builds solar modular homes that offer:
- Speedy construction
- Custom features
- Luxurious materials
- Smart living
- Net Zero homes
S2A Modular homes use advanced and smart technologies to maximize efficiency, such as:
- FreeVolt’s graphene solar panels
- Tesla Powerwalls
- Advanced HVAC systems
- Low-voltage lighting
When combined, these technologies allow S2A Modular homes to operate Net Zero, which means they are entirely self-sustaining.
FreeVolt’s graphene solar panels have been shown to produce 20-43% more energy compared to the competition. In many cases, these solar panels are so productive that they create a net positive situation, where electricity is sold back to the energy grid.
Along with Tesla Powerwall-charged homes, S2A Modular also builds:
- Commercial structures
- Full communities
- Hotels
S2A Modular can produce virtually any type of building.
S2A does it all from their MegaFactory manufacturing centers, created with the help of Kern Solar Structures.
S2A Modular Partners with Kern Solar Structures to Improve its MegaFactories
S2A focuses on building electrically self-sustaining homes, but they also aim to be self-sustaining themselves.
To achieve their efficiency goal, S2A has partnered with Kern Solar Structures and FreeVolt USA to install Solar CarPorT systems at S2A MegaFactory facilities.
Initially, S2A will install two 240kW solar carports at a few of their facilities. These systems are designed with expansion in mind, so the company can add on to the system as needed.
The Solar CarPorTs will help provide the factory with the power it needs to manufacture its homes. MegaFactories will also make use of large commercial energy storage systems to properly store any energy generated by the carports. The goal is to make the factories self-sustaining, just like the homes they produce.
How Much Do S2A Modular Homes Cost?
S2A Modular starts every project with a feasibility study, which helps you understand how much luxury prefab homes will cost based on:
- Land
- Grading
- Erosion control
- Draining
- Soil report
- Etc.
Through the feasibility study, you’ll work in three parts to understand your building costs and timeline. Anyone who works with S2A through their feasibility study will receive a comprehensive report to understand how much it will cost for:
- Expert and consultant fees
- Factory costs
- Delivery, crane and other fees
Due to the MegaFactory’s efficiency, it’s possible to create homes, commercial buildings, hotels and more with the same great quality as site-built – or better. Smart and energy-efficient, the scope of your project will dictate your exact costs, which will be provided in your report.
However, some rough figures that will help you better understand costs are:
- $190 – $275 per square foot
- Model A costs in 2018 were $129 – $139 per square foot
- S2A#GreenLuxHome costs in 2018 started at $169 per square foot
- SH1 costs in 2018 were not disclosed
All homes or structures have the option of state-of-the-art appliances, smart controls and settings and solar. If you’re trying to turn a green leaf, use alternative fuels and go electric, S2A offers an excellent opportunity to power your home and charge your vehicle using solar.
FreeVolt PV Graf™ solar panels are used due to their high-efficiency levels. Additionally, Tesla’s Powerwall is also installed to store excess energy so that if your home isn’t generating enough solar, it can use the stored energy in the Powerwall’s battery.
As a result of volatility in material costs, pricing can fluctuate greatly. While these are the costs from the factory, additional expenses are not included in these figures, such as:
- Fuel: It averaged $9 per mile in 2018
- Land
- Permits
- Crane installation
- Local and city fees
- Site improvement, grading, etc.
- Utility fees
- Foundation
- Upgrades
- Etc.
For residential builds, there are 35+ predesigned floorplans to choose from.
However, if you have a concept of your own or are building a dream home, you have the option of choosing a fully customized floor plan.
When choosing S2A Modular, you have a wide array of configuration options, including fully sustainable and self-sufficient models that utilize Tesla’s Powerwall. Surplus Energy Income (which feeds any excess power back to the energy grid to earn you money) and high-end material options.
Once you approve a design and tell S2A Modular to begin the build, the work in the factory is completed in six weeks.
Upon completion, the home or structure will need to be set with a crane and properly finished. Depending on the level of site work necessary, you can be in your home in less than six months, but the fine details will be discussed in your comprehensive report.
S2A Modular Homes Paves the Way for Green, Modular Homes
S2A’s luxury prefab homes create an opportunity for homeownership and commercial construction to reach a new level of sustainability. Building homes in a factory reduces material waste and makes each build more sustainable.
Add in the solar-first concept and true self-sufficiency, and these structures will help owners reduce their carbon footprint while eliminating energy reliance and costs.
